Obamacare – Health Care Fiasco

The government (as in Obamacare) wants to run our health care system but they can't even take care of their own. They claim Obamacrap will save Medicare and lower the cost of health insurance.

Of course we were also told if you like the plan you have you can keep it, and "we have to pass the bill so we will know what is in it".

Well dear Liza there's a hole in the bucket that even the Pentagon can't control. According to Money/CNN the folks at the Pentagon are facing run away health care costs that are as difficult to pin down as Afghan resistance fighters.

Mirroring the private sector trend, expenses have skyrocketed within the military's health system. The military spent $19 billion on health care in 2001 — and $49 billion in 2010. The Department of Defense forecasts a continued rise of 5% to 7% a year.

The bottom line: Health care will account for 10% of the Pentagon budget by 2015.

This reminds me of that song from years back, "He can't even run his own life, I'll be damned if he'll run mine".

Most Tricare reform plans generate savings by targeting two areas.

The first is shifting the burden of health care costs from the Pentagon to the private sector companies that employ many veterans after they leave the military.

And the second is a modest fee increase on retired Tricare enrollees that would still leave them with far smaller bills than individuals in private sector plans.

Cost shifting. That is something you don't hear much about.

Every taxpayer funded health care plan including Tricare, Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP (Peachcare in Georgia) pays providers less than they need to cover the cost of treatment. Every time a provider agrees to treat one of these patients they lose money, but make it up by charging private patients more.

In other words, anyone who is not covered by a government plan is forced to pay more to subsidize those individuals.

Part of that "spreading the wealth" kind of thing.

In this new era of fiscal responsibility it remains to be seen if this ox will be gored.
